Mental Health and Well-Being

At Wittenborg, we recognise that mental health is a vital component of academic success and personal development. Student life can be exciting and transformative, but it also comes with challenges; new environments, academic pressure, cultural adjustment, and personal responsibilities. That’s why we are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where students feel safe, respected, and empowered to seek help when needed.

Mental well-being is not just about addressing crises; it’s about fostering resilience, promoting balance, and encouraging open conversations. Wittenborg’s student support framework is designed to help students navigate personal difficulties and maintain their emotional health throughout their studies. Whether you are facing stress, loneliness, or more complex issues, support is available.

Our Approach to Mental Health

Wittenborg takes a proactive and student-centered approach to mental health and well-being. We aim to reduce stigma around mental health by encouraging open dialogue and ensuring that students know where to turn when they need help. Our services are confidential, accessible, and tailored to the diverse needs of our international student body.

We understand that mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of background or academic performance. That’s why our support system is built on trust, discretion and professionalism. Students are encouraged to reach out early before issues escalate and to make use of the resources available to them.

Available Support Services

Student Counsellor
Rens Platteel-de Clercq provides a confidential and welcoming space for students to discuss personal matters that may affect their well-being. These may include motivation, loneliness, relationships, integration into Dutch society, family circumstances, and general health concerns. The Student Counsellor is not a medical professional and does not offer clinical treatment, but can provide guidance and refer students to external healthcare providers when necessary.

Walk-in consultations are available for three hours per week. Students can schedule a session by contacting Rens at rens@platteel.nl or calling 06-45268720. This service is free of charge and open to all registered students.

Student Confidential Advisor
Jacqueline Horstman serves as an independent and confidential contact for students who have experienced or witnessed unacceptable behaviour within Wittenborg. This includes bullying, discrimination, sexual harassment, threats, or violence. Jacqueline offers emotional support, explains available options, and assists with formal complaint procedures.

She can be reached at jacqueline@mekander.nl or by calling 0575-547455. In her absence, a substitute advisor ensures continuity of care. This service is designed to protect students’ rights and promote a safe and respectful learning environment.

Building a Culture of Care

Mental health is a shared responsibility. At Wittenborg, we encourage students to take an active role in their own well-being and to support their peers. Faculty and staff are also trained to recognise signs of distress and to guide students toward appropriate resources.

We believe that a healthy academic community is one where students feel connected, valued, and supported. That’s why we continue to invest in mental health awareness, peer support initiatives, and inclusive policies that reflect the needs of our diverse student population.

When to Seek Help

You don’t need to wait for a crisis to reach out. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, isolated, or simply unsure about how to cope with a situation, speaking to someone can make a significant difference. Whether it’s a one-time conversation or ongoing support, Wittenborg’s services are here to help you find clarity and regain balance.

If your situation requires medical or psychological treatment, our counsellor and advisor can assist with referrals to professionals within the Dutch healthcare system. We understand that navigating external services can be challenging, especially for international students, and we’re here to guide you through the process.

Confidentiality and Trust

All conversations with the Student Counsellor and Confidential Advisor are treated with the highest level of confidentiality. Your privacy is respected at all times, and no information is shared without your consent, unless required by law or in cases of serious risk.
