More Than 200 People Come Together for Wittenborg's Annual Barbecue

Food, Music and Community Mark the Start of September Block

More than 200 students, staff and neighbours recently gathered at Wittenborg's Brinklaan campus for the annual barbecue, celebrating one of the institution's longest-running community traditions.

After being postponed by a week due to rain, Wittenborg's annual barbecue took place on 4 September, bringing together around 200 students, staff and neighbours.

The event offered a chance to reconnect after the summer, welcome new students and enjoy an evening of food, music and conversation.

According to Sophia Faraji, Wittenborg's External Relations & Events Manager, the atmosphere made this year's event particularly memorable. Faraji added that the annual barbecue remains one of Wittenborg's most valued traditions.

"It brings people together beyond the classroom and workplace. It helps strengthen relationships among students and staff, while also creating a valuable connection with our neighbours and the wider local community."

The Friday afternoon featured food, drinks and music, including DJ performances by Sean Machaya, Wittenborg's Financial Administrator.

For student Vasilisa Zavivalova, the atmosphere was particularly special.

"The atmosphere was great, the music was really good, and the food was great too. It was just a nice evening to relax and spend time with everyone."

She also highlighted the value of social events for students.

"It's nice to have events like this because you get to see people outside of the usual academic setting and actually have some fun together. It's also a good way to meet people, especially for those who just came here and are still settling in."

Student Mahgol Shambayatighajar, who also attended last year's barbecue, said meeting new students was her favourite part.

Patience Orukpe, Admissions Administrator at Wittenborg, also highlighted the importance of bringing people together outside the usual study and work environment.

"It's an opportunity to meet and interact with new students, step away from daily routines and simply enjoy the moment together."

Looking Ahead

The barbecue followed closely after Apeldoorn's Introduction Week, which welcomed many of Wittenborg's newest students through activities including the City Game and STUFU.

This September, more than 130 students from 23 countries joined Wittenborg's international community across Apeldoorn, Amsterdam and Munich, making the barbecue another opportunity for newcomers and returning students to connect.

Next on the calendar is Wittenborg's Halloween celebration.

"The Halloween event will be another opportunity for the Wittenborg community to come together and enjoy a fun social event," said Faraji.
