Meet Jan Ochieng

For Jan Ochieng, sport is more than competition. It is a powerful industry where business, marketing and community engagement come together. A graduate from Kenya with a BBA in Hospitality Business Administration specialising in Sports Business Management from Wittenborg, Jan is passionate about understanding how organisations create value through sport.

His interest in the field was inspired by a lifelong love of sports and a desire to better understand the relationship between sport and business, a connection he believes is often overlooked. Studying in the Netherlands, a country known for its strong sporting culture, offered the ideal environment to explore this interest while gaining international experience.

During his studies, Jan developed skills in teamwork, leadership, data-driven decision making and sports marketing. He also gained experience in sponsorship activation, data analytics and Microsoft Office tools, building a strong foundation for a future career in the sports industry. Through practical learning experiences, he was able to apply academic knowledge in real-world situations and strengthen his professional confidence.

Reflecting on his time at Wittenborg, Jan says: "My time at Wittenborg was incredibly rewarding. Studying alongside a truly international composition allowed me to understand the global sports market from multiple cultural perspectives, while developing the data-driven decision-making skills that modern employers are looking for today."

Jan describes himself as highly adaptable and relationship-focused, with a strong ability to work efficiently and collaboratively. His friends would describe him as loyal, hardworking, detail-oriented and driven.

Having completed his degree, Jan is looking for opportunities within the sports business sector while also considering further studies at Master's level. He hopes to continue building his expertise and contribute to organisations operating at the intersection of sport and business.
