A Master of Arts in Education – A Research Degree for Educators-in-Practice
Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences, in partnership with The University of Brighton (UK), offers education practitioners the opportunity to access professional learning and development through higher education and masters study. The course provides accredited postgraduate study focused on improving professional practice.
The MA in Education is offered fully in English and spans 2 years as a part-time programme for working students in the Netherlands and full-time for international students, who are offered additional modules and work experience.
The MA in Education programme is suitable for anyone who is working in education either in the Netherlands or abroad. It is particularly suitable for teachers and education staff working in international education, or international streams at primary, secondary and higher level schools, colleges as well as universities.
Studying your MA in Education at Wittenborg, you will develop an in-depth and critical understanding of theory and research relevant to your own specific professional needs .Wittenborg naturally adds intercultural, international and diversity dimensions to this 2 year Master degree programme.

This MA course is under validation by the University of Brighton, and will be offered at Wittenborg in Apeldoorn as from the 2019-2020 academic year. The Brighton programme has emerged as a direct result of the University of Brighton's work with practitioners and senior leaders in educational establishments. As with other University of Brighton accredited Master programmes offered at Wittenborg, this degree will be delivered jointly by both institutes.

The Education MA programme provides an opportunity to develop an in-depth and critical understanding of theory and research relevant to your own specific professional needs.

The modules are designed to complement and extend professional roles and commitments; the programme can be tailored to your interests and professional development needs whether you are a recently qualified teacher looking to return to study, or a school mentor ready to explore your role in the context of our MA programme. Maybe you are interested in a curriculum subject or particular aspect of pedagogy (in the public or private sector), or are a middle-leader keen to make improvements to your department or a senior leader looking for a transformative learning experience. The MA in Education provides accredited postgraduate study focused on improving professional practice.
Students will benefit from local Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences tutors as well as tutors from the University of Brighton who are experienced in teaching this course.The tutors are qualified to at least masters level with the majority holding or studying for doctoral qualifications. You will learn through a mixture of lectures, taught sessions, tutorials, online learning, group work, independent study and through work-related activities. The structure ensures a coherent and supportive student experience throughout the programme which comprises of core modules that can be applied in a variety of different areas. The number of modules taken enables a manageable workload as well as further opportunities for formative assessment.
You will study five modules over two years through a blended programme of sessions taught in blocks across designated weeks during the two years. Your professional context and work in educational settings is the basis for study and will enhance and complement your learning.

Post Graduate Conference
Every June the University of Brighton hosts an education research conference, in Brighton (UK) as part of the MA programme. It provides an opportunity for both full-time and part-time MA students to learn about local practitioner research findings and to network with colleagues and local partners as well as EdD and PhD students too. All Wittenborg MA Education students are welcome to participate. Wittenborg arranges a yearly visit to the UK campus, as part of its student support services.
Enhanced knowledge of educational issues and specialist areas of interest are attractive to a wide range of employers, and typical career moves after graduation include promotion to senior leadership teams, advisory roles or promotion into a different education sector including those with the capacity to influence policy.
This course will further your professional development, allow you to extend your expertise within the field of education and enhance your employability in the sector.

The course also provides a springboard for further study at a doctoral level, either through PhD or EdD routes.
Degree and experience
Good honours degree (at least a 2:2) or equivalent.
You need to be working in, or have regular access to, a relevant professional situation appropriate to an MA in Education research area.
The current professional context is one indicator of potential and applicants must demonstrate that their career / employment is conducive to engagement with a masters programme. We expect that the applicant should be sufficiently motivated by an aspect of their professional practice and have potential areas of interest and study. The personal statement is very important and you should outline how the degree will enhance your professional practice as well as any areas of interest that you may wish to research.
The personal statement
In this section, you should include details of your educational interests alongside your professional context experience which is an entry requirement for the programme. You should also demonstrate, through examples, potential areas of interest and study. It is vital that this is written in an appropriate professional tone. Making your application
You are strongly encouraged to submit your application as early as possible to ensure that pre-course preparations can be made. If your application is successful you will be invited to interview which will provide an opportunity to further explore your rationale for study and to discuss elements of your personal statement.
Interviews are held regularly throughout the year (in person or by Skype).
For non-native speakers of English
Proven competence in written and spoken English at an appropriate level of fluency equal to IELTS 7.0 overall with 6.5 in writing and no less than 6.0 in all other components.
English language requirements are in line with the requirements as described in the Code of Conduct for International Students in Dutch Higher Education (www.internationalstudy.nl)
