Background

Maria Chalevelaki, PhD, Lecturer of Applied Sciences, holds a PhD in Linguistics with a specialisation in Semiotics. Her doctoral dissertation explored fashion industry branding using the tools of semiotics from Université Lyon II, France. For several years, Maria taught semiology and visual culture in the Department of Communication at Lyon II Lumière University and in the Department of Graphic Design of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, Greece. During 2010-2011, she held a grant for postdoctoral research on Visual Culture at the School of Communication, Media and Culture of Panteion University, where she lectured at undergraduate and graduate level. She has also supervised MA theses for the Hellenic Open University. Maria is the author of a commercially successful book on applied semiotics. Her book is taught at twelve departments of higher education (departments of Architecture, Sociology, Graphic Design, Fashion). She has presented papers at international conferences and has published in scientific journals. Maria's spheres of interest revolve around semiotics, linguistics, fashion, communication and marketing.  

Maria has lived in Amsterdam since 2016 and teaches Fashion Management and Marketing courses at different international business schools for graduate and undergraduate students. She has also been the mentor of various master's dissertations. Since 2021, she has been a senior lecturer at Wittenborg, teaching Academic English, Business Philosophy, Intercultural Management and Sales & Export.  

Besides her academic activities, Maria supports marketing and communication projects as a consultant providing a cultural and semiotic perspective.
