Biography

Dr Brian Holdstock areas of expertise are in operational management based on 20 years employment as managing director of a medium sized subcontractor in the engineering sector. The company was a specialist supplier of surface treatments, principally electroplating and anodising.

Brian's initial vocational education was in electronics but immediately after achieving his engineering qualifications he became a management trainee at a national domestic appliance manufacturer. After a brief spell in local government he became commercial manager of an engineering company in the midlands and then moved to its plc parent company. There, as group publicity director, he was responsible for promotional activity across a range of products including scientific instruments, electronic components, animated displays and training aids and Avia wrist watches.

Prior to a second career at the University Brian was involved in numerous trade and industry bodies participating as a board member locally in the Engineering Training Board, the formation of the Training and Enterprise Council, a south coast Enterprise Agency, the Chartered Institute of Marketing (where he was Sussex branch president) and the International Foundation for Action Learning (IFAL).

Brian has also been a school governor, a member of British MENSA, a fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He is currently a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Brian completed his PhD at the University of Brighton in 1998 having became interested in surface treatment as an element of the management of new product development which is the subject of his doctoral research. Brian's earlier qualifications are ONC Mechanical Engineering, HNC Electronic Engineering, PG Diploma in Management Studies and PG Diploma in Business Research Methods.

Brian teaches on the masters, undergraduate and foundation degree programmes teaching business strategy, financial analysis and accounting.
